Dry Stone Walling

Dry Stone Walling in Gloucestershire

Dry stone walling is a popular feature in many gardens within the Cotswold area. We have previously used dry stone walling to build many features such as boundary walls, retaining walls, raised vegetable beds, garden seats, rockeries and much more in Cheltenham and around Gloucestershire.

Choosing the Right Stone for You

As stone is quarried from different depths and strata, a single quarry can produce stone in various sizes, shapes, colours and hardness. We will choose a stone to best suit your requirements depending on the nature of the build site and can undertake either new build or repair projects. If you are considering incorporating a stone feature in your garden we can also take care of the product concept & design phase for you to ensure you get the right result.

Construction Method

Dry stone walling is an ancient method of building whereby stones are laid in an interlocking fashion without the use of mortar. Walls are built with a foundation that is slightly wider than the wall itself, which gives it stability over a long period of time.

A dry stone wall is constructed two courses wide with the gap between them filled with packing stones of varying granular grades to give it strength. At regular intervals during the build a ‘through stone’ is used which spans the width of the wall again giving it integrity. Once the wall is complete, coping stones are laid on the top of the wall with various styles to choose from such as single, double or flat.
