George-Stone Gardens

A traditional craft, properly executed.

Dry stone walling is a popular feature in many gardens within the Cotswold area. We have previously used dry stone walling to build features such as boundary walls, retaining walls, raised vegetable beds, garden seats, rockeries and much more across Cheltenham and Gloucestershire.

As stone is quarried from different depths and strata, a single quarry can produce stone in various sizes, shapes, colours and hardness. In the areas around Cheltenham the creamy-grey Cotswold stone is the most common and very much suited to local projects. We can also take care of the concept and design phase to ensure you get the right result.

Choosing the Right Stone

Choosing the Right Stone

We will help you choose a stone to best suit your requirements depending on the nature of the build site — taking into account colour, finish, size and hardness relative to the local environment and how the wall will be used.

We undertake both new build and repair projects. For repair work we can source matching stone to integrate seamlessly with existing walling, or use a complementary stone where a perfect match is not possible.

Construction Method

Construction Method

Dry stone walling is an ancient method of building whereby stones are laid in an interlocking fashion without the use of mortar. Walls are built with a foundation slightly wider than the wall itself, which gives stability over a long period of time.

The wall is constructed two courses wide with the gap between filled with packing stones of varying granular grades. At regular intervals a "through stone" spans the full width of the wall, giving it integrity. Once complete, coping stones are laid on top — available in single, double or flat styles.
