Composite Decking
Deservedly popular, composite decking is steadily growing in use as awareness of its low-maintenance characteristics develops. Usually made from a mixture of recycled wood, plastic and resins, it is available in a multitude of colours and finished textures — ribbed or smooth — to suit a wide range of projects and tastes.
Unlike softwood timber, algae does not grow on the surface of composite decking so the problem of slippery surfaces does not occur, even in shady areas. Basic cleaning with mild soap and water when required is all the maintenance it needs. Guarantees on the boards themselves vary from brand to brand but are usually a minimum of 10 years, and up to 25 years in some cases.
Hardwood Decking
For those who prefer a natural product with slightly less maintenance than standard softwood, hardwood decking is often the answer. It falls somewhere between softwood and composite in terms of care requirements, but has beautifully rich, warm tones that can be further enhanced by the use of decking oils.
The main species used include Iroko, Yellow Balau, Teak and Cedar. The overall cost is often not too dissimilar to that of composite decking, making the choice largely one of aesthetic preference and how natural a material you want in your garden.
Softwood Decking
Softwood is easily sourced and readily available, making it the most budget-friendly option on the current market. It provides a warm, natural feel to the garden and with regular cleaning and maintenance can be expected to last for around ten years.
Softwood does require more care than hardwood or composite — algal growth on ribbed surfaces in shaded or damp areas means it needs regular cleaning to keep it safe underfoot. It's a good choice for those who want the look of natural timber and are comfortable with the maintenance regime that comes with it.
Decking Accessories & Finishing Details
Often the details added to a deck make all the difference between a standard result and an exceptional one. Boards can be laid in a diagonal orientation with a finish board around the perimeter for contrast, adding real design flair compared to standard horizontal layouts.
For raised decks above 600mm from ground level, balustrade systems need real consideration for safety. For softwood decks a wooden system is most common, though rope instead of spindles creates a relaxed, coastal feel. Stainless steel wire rope and glass panels achieve safety in contemporary gardens without aesthetic compromise.
