Construction Materials
Walls can be built from timber, concrete blocks, natural stone, brick or ready-made blocks dressed to resemble dry stone walling. During the design process we will discuss what kind of materials would suit your project and budget and explain our method of construction.
For retaining walls on steeper slopes, a structural approach is essential — properly engineered footings, drainage provision and the right wall thickness all contribute to a wall that holds for decades rather than one that fails in the first hard winter.
Coping Stones & Finishing Details
Once the wall is complete it is preferable for a coping stone to be laid on top — it helps keep water off the wall, particularly if it is being rendered. Many contemporary designs show walls rendered over the top and painted, which gives a very crisp look, though the render will require more maintenance compared to a wall finished with a coping stone.
Coping stones are available in concrete, natural stone or specially cut paving slabs with a bullnose edge. Using a coping stone that matches your patio range is a great way to tie a design together — and contrasting or complementing shades can add real design flair.
