Turfing & Lawn Laying

Replacing tired or weed-ridden grass can make a huge difference to a property and really lift the whole feel of a garden. Laying new turf also gives you the opportunity to level out any humps and hollows at the same time, making mowing easier and the garden more usable.

George-Stone Gardens

A lawn that establishes properly and stays looking right.

Replacing tired or weed-ridden grass can make a huge difference to a property and really lift the whole feel of a garden. Laying new turf also gives you the opportunity to level out any humps and hollows at the same time, making mowing easier and the garden more usable.

We offer everything from a strip and re-lay to turfing blank-canvas new build gardens, and seeding for problem or large areas. When laying new turf, unless the ground is particularly good, we almost always import a layer of high-quality topsoil to form a well-draining, level base for the turf to start its new life.

Turf Varieties

Turf Varieties

Generally speaking we use two types of turf: a budget option and a slightly finer, more premium version. Both are made from a very similar grass mix; the budget version has a degradable netting underneath (to make it easier to lift from the field) which is absent in the premium version. For lawn repairs or extensions to existing lawns the budget version blends in particularly well.

During a site visit we are happy to advise on which type of turf is best suited to your project, or we can provide you with comparison costs so you can make an informed choice.

Preparation & Installation

Preparation & Installation

We give new turf a strong start by rotovating the ground if it is heavily compacted, followed by levelling and light compaction to create a smooth, even surface. We then dress the soil with a specific pre-turfing fertiliser to ensure strong root growth in the first few months.

The result is a lawn that establishes cleanly, looks right quickly, and stays right — rather than one that takes hold unevenly and needs corrective work in the first season.

Turf Aftercare & Advice

Turf Aftercare & Advice

It is vital to keep new turf well watered for at least the first two weeks after it has been laid — particularly in the warmer summer months and during dry spells. Avoid walking on the turf for the first two weeks to give it a chance to settle. The first cut is usually necessary after about two weeks; just a light trim to begin with, lowering the cutting height over the next two cuts.

We fertilise the ground with a pre-turfing fertiliser before laying and it is not advisable to fertilise again until another six months have passed. We also offer a lawn mowing and maintenance service if you need assistance looking after your new lawn longer term.
